Founded in 2004, uShip<\/a> is one of the world\u2019s largest and most trusted online transportation marketplaces which serves freight, household goods, and vehicle shipping markets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People and businesses around the world now use what3words for deliveries and logistics, emergency services, and outdoor activities. The London-based company has scaled from four languages to 60 as it expanded quickly. what3words now operates across the globe in almost every continent. \u201cRight from the very beginning, one of the main ambitions of the company was that we wanted to become the global standard for addressing,\u201d said Jamie Brown, Chief Languages Services Officer at what3words. \u201cGiven our product literally involves words, translations aren\u2019t only to help people to use the product; it is literally the product itself.\u201d The company now employs nearly 160 people, with a language team that has three full-time employees and close relationships with nearly 100 freelance translators, including roughly 15 lead linguists in key languages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Bringing translators and developers together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every 30 seconds a new shipment is listed on uShip. From cars to cranes, freight to furniture, and households to horses, people and businesses use uShip because it\u2019s easy and affordable to price, book, and ship everything no matter if it\u2019s going local or long distance. To support its presence in 18 countries and expansion to new markets, uShip created an in-house localization solution which was largely based on the .NET framework.

This involved a bespoke web application and a storage schema for the final translation storage. uShip\u2019s owntool modeled only the storage and retrieval of the data, but not the translator\u2019s workflow. Translators\u2014lacking a way to keep track of their work\u2014and developers\u2014lacking time to improve the tool\u2014resorted to spreadsheets to keep track of their localization and translation processes. Although the tool served its purpose for a long time and required very little maintenance, uShip\u2019s recent partnerships required them to localize into additional languages and enlist external translators to aid them with the process.
