Platform Engineer

At Phrase, we help open the door to global business by providing the world’s leading Language Intelligence Platform.

The Phrase Platform combines AI, Agentic orchestration, and a headless, API first architecture in one composable system. Beyond translation, it orchestrates and adapts content to culture, audience, channel, brand voice, and intended outcome in any language, for every audience. It applies the context that makes content perform in every market: quality standards, glossaries, prior translations, and cultural nuance. Every team, in every region, can ship content that is on-brand, on-point, and ready for any audience.

Phrase gives enterprises the intelligence to automate workflows, the freedom to connect their own tools and engines, and the control to govern global content at scale.

With a global team based in our offices, and remote colleagues across Europe, the UK, the US, and the APAC region, Phrase offers an international environment built on collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose.

Platform Engineering at Phrase builds the paved road every other engineering team drives on; running the cloud foundations of an AI first product company, and increasingly building the internal platforms that make AI part of how the whole company works, not just what it sells. Reporting to the Platform Director, this role works alongside a team of senior and mid-level engineers without direct reports of their own, leading through architecture, code, and example rather than people management. You’ll take ambiguous, cross cutting problems and turn them into platform capabilities, owning them end to end from the first design conversation with development teams through delivery and running them in production. The team is shifting left from operating shared systems on others’ behalf to building the tooling and self-service capabilities that let teams own their own services, and you’ll be a driving force in that transition, not a caretaker of the leftovers.

What you’ll be responsible for

  • Own technical delivery of the Internal AI Delivery Platform, enabling Phrase teams to ship AI applications and agents safely to production with built in guardrails
  • Define what “AI proficient platform engineering” looks like in practice, using AI for tasks ranging from IaC generation to incident analysis
  • Transition security into automated guardrails, including vulnerability gates in CI/CD and continuous compliance for SOC 2 and ISO 27001
  • Build deployment tooling and self-service infrastructure that makes the right way the easy way for development teams
  • Treat cloud cost as an engineering problem, ensuring platform capability scales without scaling spend
  • Design and build platform capabilities on our AWS and Kubernetes foundation, with everything as code and everything in Git
  • Set architectural direction, review designs, and mentor engineers as a technical anchor for the team
  • Partner with development teams from architecture through delivery so the platform evolves ahead of their needs
  • Own what you build in production, including participating in the team’s 24×7 on-call rotation
  • Continuously raise the level of automation across CI/CD, compliance, and operations

What you need

  • A track record designing and delivering platforms or internal products that other teams depend on
  • Deep experience running workloads in Kubernetes and public cloud (AWS)
  • Solid Linux and networking fundamentals
  • Fluency in at least one programming or scripting language
  • Fluency using AI tools for daily engineering work, with experience running AI workloads in production
  • A strong sense of ownership. You take responsibility for outcomes and proactively step into gaps
  • A collaborative approach that prioritizes team success over individual heroism, with clear stakeholder communication
  • Comfort leading through architecture, code, and influence rather than formal people management
  • Experience treating security as an engineering capability, e.g. CI/CD vulnerability gates or SOC 2 / ISO 27001 compliance (desirable)

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
