From Memsource to Phrase Language Intelligence

Fifteen years from a translation memory tool in Prague to the world’s leading Language Intelligence Platform.

2010
2010 · Prague
Memsource is founded
David Čaněk launches Memsource with a clear mission: make translators’ lives easier. The name combines “translation memory” and “source” because that’s exactly what the tool does.
2012
2012 · Hamburg
Phrase is founded
A separate company, Phrase, launches from Hamburg as an agile localization platform for software developers and digital product teams. Two great tools, two different problems, same space.
2021
January 2021
Memsource acquires Phrase
Memsource, backed by The Carlyle Group, acquires Phrase, bringing together enterprise TMS strength with developer-first localization capabilities. The combination covers the full localization picture for the first time.
2022
September 2022
One name: Phrase
Both brands unify under Phrase. Memsource TMS becomes Phrase TMS. The Phrase strings platform becomes Phrase Strings. One company, one platform, one less thing to explain to procurement.

June 2026 · Today
The Language Intelligence Platform
Phrase evolves beyond localization into a Language Intelligence Platform. The question shifts from “did we translate this?” to “did the content work in that market?”. Brand voice, glossaries, cultural context, and quality standards are built into the pipeline, not applied after it.

Your TMS is still here. A lot more came with it.

If you used Memsource, your workflows, your data, and your login are all waiting for you. Here’s what’s the same and what’s grown around it.

Everything you already had

  • Your translation memories, termbases, and project history
  • Automated workflows and QA checks you depend on
  • 500+ language support across 50+ file formats
  • CMS connectors, REST API, and third-party MT integrations
  • Your existing login. cloud.memsource.com redirects automatically
  • Enterprise-grade security and compliance

Now: The Language Intelligence Platform

Phrase has evolved beyond localization. Here’s what that actually means.

The campaign performed at home. It underperformed everywhere else. The diagnosis was “improve the translation.” Six months later, the same meeting happened again.

It’s not a translation problem. It’s a brand consistency problem that starts earlier in the pipeline. Phrase’s intelligence layer fixes that: brand voice, style guides, glossaries, and cultural context are part of the system, not a PDF that gets emailed around.

And because AI agents are increasingly part of content workflows alongside humans, the platform serves both equally, same brand context, same governance, whether the request comes from a marketer or a machine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Memsource still available?

Yes. Everything Memsource did continues as Phrase TMS. Nothing’s been deprecated. Your projects, translation memories, and settings all carried over.

Do I need to create a new account?

No. Your credentials are the same. The login URL moved to eu.phrase.com/idm-ui/signin, but cloud.memsource.com redirects you there automatically.

Why did Memsource change its name to Phrase?

In 2021, Memsource acquired Phrase, a developer-first localization platform built for software and product teams. In September 2022, both companies unified under the Phrase name to reflect a single platform covering everything from enterprise TMS to developer-native localization. Read the full story.

Will my existing integrations and API calls still work?

Backwards compatibility was maintained throughout the transition. The Phrase developer documentation has the latest API references and migration notes if you’re updating integrations.

What’s the difference between Phrase TMS and Phrase Strings?

Phrase TMS (formerly Memsource) is the enterprise translation management capability, built for localization teams managing large content volumes with workflows, vendor management, and QA.

Phrase Strings (formerly the original Phrase) is built for developers and product teams managing localization of software, apps, and websites at the code level. Both sit inside the same platform.

What does “Language Intelligence Platform” mean?

In June 2026, Phrase evolved from a localization platform into a Language Intelligence Platform. The difference is an intelligence layer that applies brand voice, style guides, glossaries, and cultural context at every stage of the pipeline. Rather than asking “did we translate this?”, the platform asks “did the content perform in that market?” and gets measurably better the more content runs through it. Read the full announcement.
